DISTRICT PLANNERS MEET WITH VILLAGE LEADERSHIP AND SUTHERLAND HS NEIGHBORS
SutherlandHighSchool’sProposedNewLook:

On September 3rd school district personnel met with Village leadership and on September 4th with neighbors to share the preliminary plans for the major expansion and renovation of Sutherland High School. “The District is aware of the importance of Sutherland High School to the Village. Our focus has been on bringing Sutherland into the 21st century academically while preserving its character as a significant Village structure. It was important for us to hear from the Village and our neighbors before the plans were complete, infoand we are pleased that several ideas that came from these meetings could be incorporated into the final plans,” says George Kisha Assistant Superintendent for Business.

Issues of particular interest to the neighbors included traffic, parking, lighting, screening and the façade of the building.

“We are sensitive to the impact school traffic has, especially on those who live in the Sutherland - West Jefferson Road area,” says Kisha. Enlargement of the parking lots will create approximately 35 additional spaces. Moving maintenance and some office personnel to other sites will further improve the parking situation.

The neighbors were assured that lighting will be designed to meet Village codes and be as unobtrusive to the neighborhood as possible. The neighbors will be offered the opportunity to participate in determining the types of plant material that will be used as screening.

Representatives from the District’s architect, Thomas Associates, presented visuals of the new design and described their approach to blending in the additions in such a way that the integrity of the existing building is not compromised.

Highlights of the changes included in the presentation
included:

All school buses will enter and exit via a semi-circular one-way drive paralleling Sutherland Street.
The new main entrance will be off the current parking lot. A drop-off entrance for students being driven to and from school will be included at that location.
The current vehicular access at the south end of Sutherland Street will be relocated slightly away from West Jefferson Road to serve as the exit from the new bus loop.
An improved parking lot will be developed near the Lomb Building to meet administrative needs.
A “park-like setting” will be developed where the bus loop is now, with walking paths and a mini-amphitheater developed where the flagpole now stands. Planners envision the site as a focus for displays of student art or a small open-air stage.
Streetlights on school property adjoining Sutherland Street and West Jefferson Road will match period lighting used in Pittsford Village.
A “stage house” will be added to the main building on the West Jefferson side as part of the new 1000 seat auditorium that will replace the “large” gym.
A new gymnasium is proposed for the northwest corner of the building.
In order to avoid any intrusion into the Lomb Woods, the new football field and track will be relocated slightly and
realigned.
